the all orignial 6BQ5 based Fisher 440 A, mint from a circa 1960 Stereo . Excellent clean chassis and complete with very nice letters. This amp is beautiful, just about perfect -- I saw only two worn letters on the otherwise totally corrosion free new-like condition chassis! Unit is mint. Completely untested, as found. Underside and chassis are super clean and complete.

Just found at an estate, and appears to have been in seviceable shape.  We didn't have time to test, and I saw nothing at all wrong ---you'll need  Well known to be an amazing amp for the money -- making an honest and high quality 10 watts per channel. Great for any moderate to high efficiency sperakers. After this amp gets fixed up, it's the preferred alternative to the cluttered front end of Fishers otherwise excellent X-series integrated, and other 1960's amps and receivers ))

We have here, actually one of Fisher's best little amps...  Why pay top dollar for an expensive receiver or integrated Fisher, when you can get the the best built, with same good parts -- minus the preamp and tuner --  The power supply of the amp is over built, as it powered it's companion preamp and tuner. These 440 models predated the later, higher powered Futura line, which harnished hard to get, spicy USA based 7591 tubes. If you are using normal speakers, the refined and musical EL84 / 6BQ5 is a far better choice. The 6BQ5 sounds just as nice or nicer -- lots of clean wattage and the ability to use nice sounding Mullard or Telefunken tubes --- or the plentiful selection of excellent USA types.

As you can see in exhibit A, the amp is immaculate -- allot nicer, cleaner and preserved than many you'll ever see. This amp is untested, and includes used tubes as shown.

You will need a short trip to the bench to get it fired up and running perfectly; you will need to jumper the switch (the plug you see on the top), plan on a short trip to the bench to replace power supply caps (if needed), and on these it's well documented (check google), you'll need to reroute the cathode bias overto the 7247's, and add a couple of resistors. Check exhibit (B) to see how nice and original the underside of this pristine 440A is! Very nice, and if you do the bench work your self, you can save as many of the nice original caps as you see....this amp was very low hours, 1 owner, climate controlled home for the last 55 years!

Fisher made very few EL84 based amps, and they are well worth the cost & effort to own. The 6BQ5 is a very sweet and detailed tube.

It's quite easy to forget that Avery Fisher's mainstay 60 years ago, was to build the best sounding Stereo console system (at a consequently huge price)! These decked out, mid-century stereophonic uber consoles  apexed in the early 1960s. By that time, they had all become stereo,.. at first complex , the un-reliable record changer had finally been mastered by Britain's finely built Garrard units -- long time supplier to Fisher for their top-end products.  Fisher sourced .. or built some of the finest OEM german components to use in their amps and receivers...and the result was a very clean sound, with little coloration, great detail and superior HiFi frequency response.

So, by the early 1960s -- the console standard moved up from 2 way to 3 way, and seriously powerful and clean sounding, yet compact amplifers were installed. Meet the one of the early amps that powered such medium sized stereo models Fisher designed and built.

For those wise audiophiles who would love the nice quality of Fisher's late 50's / early 60s integrated designs --- but prefer your own quality preamp, custom with the amp of your choice .. ... this model 440A the perfect project for expedited DiY, without a huge pricetag of Fishers well known masterpieces.

This is an exciting buy .... it has quality parts throughout this original condition survivor.

The amp is nice looking, but untested / unpowered.  Installed tubes are: tested, used 6BQ5 asst USA brand, and (2) nice original Fisher GE 7247.
