Resembling a sleek, mid 1960's business executive's briefcase, in both size and style ... this decked out machine looks more at home in a mid-century office, than on at the electronics tech's bench. Very cool to use and look at, these are verifiably collectible. The appeal does not end there ...  it's the flagship Sencore tube tester -- very expensive when new -- not as popular as competitor's B&K models -- and much more invloved and capable. Sencore went the high road with asthetics, and sold these back in the 1960s for huge money. They staged educaton seminars for technitions back then, showing off all of the advanced features the MU150 had, compared to other types of portables. A tube era technition or traveling engineer generally left Sencore's show,  feeling these were the deus-ex machina of tube troubles!

It's quite true, if you did audio repairs back then, having a set that tested Mutual Conductance on many tubes, with an available conversion chart to GM/Micromhos was somthing only a few machines could do.  Added to the over-the-top GAS / shorts bridge -- it's one heck of a sensitive checker.

The MU150 (an updated version of the MU140), really does the extra mile to find trouble making tubes. It's why tube amp guys pay so much for it's far less capapable sibling, the"MityMite" --- for the GRID LEAKAGE test. When in this mode, the MU150 uses it's sensitive bridge to find noisy and "GASSY" tubes. The large tube bridge-meter is like a microscope compared to even the most expensive Laboratory machines!  The MU150 was designed to quickly determine if your power tube WILL WORK, HOW STRONG IT IS, and finally to MATCH it up gain wise with others. Laboratory testers like the big Hickoks, Triplett, Weston and AVO -- and the newer AT1000 actually either cannot find GAS as well as this machine. Or in the case of the latest technology AT1000 -- which checks for GAS, but can visually show it to you as well as the physical meter.

Furthermore, with the included manual, it's possible to test any tube you want, same as with the big lab machines like the 539c and RCA WT100. For an odd tube you would need to add a socket or use clips. Either is possible. These pretty looking MU-150's are very capable!    (see Exhibit L,M)

Not for the novice -- and idealy suited for those already in love with Sencore's other high quality audio test equipment of the era. This Cadillac model builds on every thing amazing about the MityMite tester. It has it's own filament transformer and will work on 220V with simple restrapping modification (for overseas customers).

We have owned just about every brand and type of tube tester over the years. most experienced audiophile, collectors  and  technicians have narrowed the best, and most useful models to just a few. By the 1960s, in the USA only a few companies were making seriously good checkers -- and they were really expensive -- and by then elimated all 4 pin sockets -- with superior stability, GAS and shorts screening -- this era of machine is a must for serious audiophiles -- even if you already own a Hickok -- the Sencore offers several sensitivites other checkers can't match.

Tube testing is such an art, that most companies had entirely unique and novel methods. Specialty machines for post war  tubes  are best suited to Audophiles and Guitar / Musical Instrument enthusiasts, were not made for very long. Only a fraction of years, right at the end of the tube era -- making them in short supply.

Enough emphasis can't be placed on have a good tube tester. Mysteries solved, tubes matched, problems fixed and money made. Very few machines are as well trusted by guitar and tube power amp  repair techs both the MU150 and the lesser, emissions-only Mity-Mite excel for many of the modern, high power preamp and output tubes.

There are just a handful of superior technician's testers. Easier, more portable and faster to setup than the Lab style of machine. And in the case of the MU150 (and the smaller MityMite) --- a far  superior  machine for really checking out higher power pentodes like 6V6, 6L6GC and 6550, KT 66, KT 88 . The MU150 is a rare bird, and of great interest to those already in love with the baby siblings... the MityMite series; as well as anyone who loves Sencore test equipment.  Sencore had unique, highly user friendly  approaches in test equipment -- excellent documentation, and a feel that could not be beat. Their only competitor back in the day ... B&K who also made several tester models of the 60's & 70's -- most notably the larger plastic cased, Mutual Conductance (only) 747. The 747 didn't have the ultra sensitive tube bridge for gas/shorts (not sure of their design, but it doesn't work magic like this machine)  ... nor did the B&K have the true ability to give power tubes real world LOADS, in emissions mode (as this MU-150 DOES do)

For signal / voltage gain  tubes (12ax7, ecc83, 12at7, 12au7, 6Dj8 etc), this tester also excellent almost uncanny abilities --  You see, the MU150 actually has a real tube VTVM "bridge" connected to that incredibly sensitive meter (Sencore had allot of experience building great VTVM's) -- to look for even the tiniest shorts!  They also tuned the circuit to find worn, gas filled tubes -- no other testers -- not even the modern Amplitrex AT1000 computerized can manage this feat quite as well! ). Sometimes that's the only was large old power tubes go...(from conductive gasses). If you work on power amps, and don't need confusing "lab" numbers, then these are very cool machines.

The Sencore MU150 was the flagship tester produced, able to test many (not all) tubes in both Emissions and GM good/bad"english"...and with the special conversion grid -- you can also get to GM (micromhos) numbers; or engineering numbers (the kind you see in the tube manual).

The MU 150 is a complex machine, and this is a rare opportunity to buy one REBUILT, better than new. (Google the MU150, to see how important this is)  After acquiring this machine from the original owner , I had the only known Sencore MU150 expert restorer of this model ,C.G. Industries, of Florida ; completely rebuild & calibrate in Aug, 2009 -- we only kept this unit as a backup to other testers -- so it has been on less than 1hr since total restoration.   This restoration included all new capacitors, new resistors, tube bridge adjust + new tube, all sockets cleaned, new grounded 3 prong cord, and the delicate internal circuit board was repaired with parts that will last the remainder of this machines long life.  This machine is sold as WORKING, NO DOA  --  it's not guaranteed  however -- to match other testers you may own -- due to the huge variation over tester methodology, circuits  and designs.

It is freshly calibrated and rebuilt, and test results match our other  machines perfectly, including an Amplitex computerized AT1000,  calibrated TV7 and dynamic emissions based Jackson 648.

Shown in EXHIBIT J is this machine testing a 12Ax7A, which the Amplitrex AT1000 reports at #1.8ma/1200 #2 .8ma / 1200, testing it at about 100%.

Referencing the results in GM are given in the Sencore documentation, as well as on the EASY to understand GOOD/BAD meter.

During the restoration and total rebuild of this machine,  I also had a unique, interesting MOD made.  (see exhibit K) -- The shorts bulb was rerouted, and replaced with special banana jacks -- you can connect headphones or an Oscilloscope to. As I changed my  tester habits, my MU150 has been entirely spare and unused, and has less than 1 hr of use on it since then.

The tester works great on every function, and agrees with EVERY other tester I have here. It's been claibrated, and rebuilt inside with lot's of brand new precision resistors & caps  ... it does not drift or test low or high -- it's spot on.  The only notable quirk, a slight 60cycle hum on the chassis -- normal since day one ... and does not cause a problem. Probably normal for the design -- and may not be present at your location (varies with mains supply).

The noise test jacks  -- not at all an original feature on the MU 150, but is a beloved feature on other audiophile specialty testers, like the MAxi-Matcher. SEE EXHIBIT K for this in action ...  tube noise shows up as static and jitters, riding on a steady 60 cycle hum, coming from the machine.  (OSCILLOSCOPE not included)

This is an unique and useful mod, but is MOSTLY UNTESTED function.  The execution is beautiful and cannont be discerened cosmetically from FACTORY work. Should the new owner need support, I will refer them to Bud, at C.G. Industries -- the technition who engineered it for us. He can also advise overseas owners -- the procedure for 220V mains wiring....

The MU-150 is an excellent machine for your testing arsenal. Note, it does not test older 4 pin numbers alike 45, 2A3, 80 -- it does many tubes, mostly after 1950 or so -- including all of the popular musical instrument and HiFi amp / preamp tubes.

Cosmetics are nice, not perfect.  The high quality stainless steel faceplate is shinny and gourgeous... with typical minor oxidation ... and the exterior chassis trim also has slight surface oxidation  -- all normal normal for it's age. It has a few dings and minor scrapes, the cabinet presents nicely.  The auto-hinge works firmly and latches OK.  The grounded power cord is supple. Includes the original user manual and tube settings handbook.

The tester will arrive NO DOA. Not the shorts lite was removed in lieu of the special audible noise test function; I which did not extensively test.

Internally refeshed and recently calibrated, this is a unique, highly useful, and downright beautiful tester -- Not sure when, if ever you'll get a rebuilt one ..will sell quickly.
